Three New England Women of Song

Sunday, March 19, 2006, 3:30 PM (Meet the Composers - 2:15)
St. Mark's Class of 1945 Hall, Southborough

Pamela Marshall: Weaving the World
Amy Beach: Festival Jubilate
Gwyneth Walker: River Songs

Our first concert to be devoted to three of New England's finest women composers of the last century. This concert is a celebration of the accomplishments and progress of women composers in the last century. There will be a pre-concert presentation, Meet the Composers, which will focus on the changing role of women, especially women composers, in music over the last century.

The Assabet Valley Mastersingers has commissioned Weaving the World by Pamela Marshall as part of a choral consortium. This will be the first concert performance.

River Songs by Gwyneth Walker was originally commissioned and performed by the Mastersingers in 1996. Carson Cooman of the New Music Quarterly says River Songs is "one of the very finest works for chorus and orchestra written by an American and the very finest setting of these traditional songs/spirituals."

Festival Jubilate is a rarely heard early work by Amy Beach. It was written for the dedication of the Women's Building at Chicago's Columbian Exposition of 1892 and won recognition for her as a serious composer in the Romantic genre.
