Elijah - An OratorioSunday, March 14, 2010, 3:30 PM Elijah - Felix Mendelssohn Philip Lima – Elijah Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Elijah one of the most popular choral works and perhaps second only to Handel’s Messiah. An outstanding cast of soloists, performed in the stunning concert hall at St. Mark’s school make this an event not to be missed. This romantic work is considered one of the greatest of Mendelssohn's works. The work features the dramatic story of the prophet Elijah from the Old Testament of the Bible, told in harmonies both alluring and lurid. Mendelssohn uses these Biblical episodes, doubtless well fitted to the taste of Mendelssohn's time, with a Victorian sentimentality detectable in places. |
An American PerspectiveSaturday, May 22, 2010, 8:00 PM Jubilant Song- Norman Dello Joio with Judy Yauckoes, Piano and David Bonneau, Baritone We end this season with a joyous celebration of American composers. Each on their own way present a unique, yet harmonious interpretation of music in 20th century America. Dello Joio’s exciting Jubilant Song provides an exciting fanfare to three unique perspectives of American Music. Bolcom’s Mask is contemporary setting of text by Afro-American poets, while Copland’s Old American Songs” retain some of that early American simplicity and starkness. Six American Hymns arranges six familiar hymn tunes some in gospel style, some in Jazz style, but all fresh and engaging. |
