Annelies is a choral dramatic work based on “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl,” which takes the teenager’s remarkable and penetrating observations, written whilst hiding in an Amsterdam attic, as the basis of its extraordinary and moving libretto. The libretto is compiled and translated by Melanie Challenger, and the music is by James Whitbourn. Whitbourn’s music creates a score “whose respectful understatement is its greatest strength” (The Times). This performance by the Assabet Valley Mastersingers, Dr. Robert P Eaton, Director, was accompanied by full orchestra with Lynn Eustis as the soloist. Also performing with AVM was the Shir Joy Chorus, Wendy Damoulakis, Director. Our Price:$18 Click on the button to purchase this CD securely through PayPal. |
This double CD from the Assabet Valley Mastersingers contains a wealth of musical gems and is a worthy addition to one’s music library. The Mass of the Children is beautifully performed with the Worcester Children’s chorus setting the tone with a warm and exquisite opening. The Beethoven classic Mass in C is sung with brilliance and energy and Maria Ferrante is outstanding as always in Poulenc’s Gloria. Gounod’s Messe Chorale is a rarely heard and/or recorded masterwork and one that deserves greater attention.

Also included is Brahm’s Neue Liebeslieder – Walzer Op 65, which addresses these same themes of love, lust, and women but in a more lyrical and richly ‘romantic’ style. The vaults and spacious arches of the European Gothic style venues will reverberate with beautiful music designed and composed for just such large spaces. The CD features shorter a capella works and chorus with brass including works by Gabrieli, Schütz, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Górecki, and Biebl. Gabrieli’s seldom heard Magnificat for three choirs is especially glorious with The Sterling Brass Consort
