Christopher Hutchinson, Tenor, has performed on the stage with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Chautauqua Opera, Arizona Opera, Opéra Louisiane, the Berks Opera Workshop, and Southern Arizona Opera Company to name a few. During the Spring of the 2014 year he will make his debut in the role of Arcadio from Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas with the Opera Institute of Boston University. During the 2013 Boston University Fringe Festival Christopher performed the role of Davey palmer in Jonathan Dove’s Siren Song, and earlier in the Spring of that year made his debut in the roles of Sir Philip Wingrave from Britten’sOwen Wingrave as well as Tito in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito. Mr. Hutchinson recently performed the roles of Don Ramiro from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Rodolfo from Puccini’s La bohème, and Anatol from Barber’sVanessa with LSU Opera. This past summer he performed the role of the Lamplighter in Chautauqua Opera’s production of Manon Lescaut while representing the company as a returning Studio Artist. In the summer of 2011, while performing the role of Belmonte in a production of Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail he was praised for having “exactly the right vocal quality for this role, and displayed endless breath and dynamic control.” He has been privileged to work with numerous great conductors such as Joseph Colaneri, Richard Buckley, Joseph Rescigno, Dean Williamson, Cal Stewart Kellogg, and Joel Revzen.
He is equally at home on the concert stage having performed recitals in Arizona, Louisiana, and New York, as well as abroad in Italy, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Mr. Hutchinson has performed as the soloist in numerous sacred works such as Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah. He was a semi-finalist for the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition and in 2009 was an Arizona District winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. He is also a career grant recipient from the Baton Rouge Opera Guild as well as the 2012-2013 Edith Kilgore Kirkpatrick recipient of the Award in Voice from the Music Club of Baton Rouge. Mr. Hutchinson is also the 2013 Phyllis Curtin award winner. This past summer was his debut with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as a member of the Gerdine Young Artist Program where he performed the Ring Announcer in the world premiere opera by Terrence Blanchard Champion. He spent the two previous summers in Chautauqua, New York where he performed as a Studio Artist with Chautauqua Opera, and was awarded a Chautauqua Opera Guild Encouragement Award.
Mr. Hutchinson is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma at Boston University’s Opera Institute where he studies with mezzo soprano Penelope Bitzas. Christopher recently graduated from Louisiana State University with a Master of Music degree under the tutelage of tenor Robert Grayson. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Arizona where he studied with tenor Grayson Hirst and clarinet with Jerry Kirkbride.
