Attendees are encouraged to bring their own scores and join the Assabet Valley Mastersingers and soloists in performing this magnificent work. The timeless masterpiece "Elijah" by Felix Mendelssohn promises to reignite the spirit of one of classical music's most cherished compositions. Mendelssohn's "Elijah" is a monumental work of art, revered for its grandeur, emotional depth, and captivating storytelling. Through its majestic choruses, soaring arias, and poignant recitatives, "Elijah" transports audiences to the heart of biblical drama, depicting the trials and triumphs of the prophet Elijah with unparalleled intensity and fervor. This masterpiece has stood the test of time, resonating with listeners for generations with its sublime melodies and powerful narrative. Two very popular contemporary works, Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass” and Elaine Hagenberg’s “Illuminare” will be framed by two shorter works with strong social messages. Christopher Tin’s “Walayo Yamoni,” sung in Swahili, an uplifting setting of a Lango rainmaking prayer will begin the program. Jake Runestad’s “We Can Mend the Sky” is a poignant setting of poetry by a 14-year-old Somali immigrant that expresses an affirmation of hope as we all embrace the diversity around us.
