Sing with Us!

AVM has been conducting weekly online rehearsals via Zoom since September 2020. Each rehearsal typically includes vocal warm-ups and vocalises, the study of a future concert work, as well as a presentation related to the Theme of the Month. During February the Artistic Director gave us insight each week into African American choral music (in conjunction with Black History month). March (Women’s History Month) will focus on choral music composed by women, and AVM commissioned works composed by women.

We meet via Zoom Monday evenings at 7:15 p.m. for warm-ups and vocalises. Rehearsal begins at 7:30 p.m. and runs until 8:45 p.m.

Interested singers are invited to attend a rehearsal. An audition is required to join once in-person rehearsals resume. While vocal training is not essential basic musicianship, a good musical ear and a dedication and love for the choral classics are a must.

When in-person rehearsals resume, if you find you would like to continue with the group, we ask that you prepare a piece to provide the Artistic Director with a sense of your voice qualities. The piece need not be elaborate. The meeting with the Artistic Director will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time, generally prior to a Monday rehearsal.

Members purchase their own music, pay annual dues, and participate in a fall fund drive to obtain advertisers and donors to support the organization’s operating budget. Weekly attendance at rehearsals is expected.

If you or someone you know would like to join us or have questions, please have them contact the AVM Membership Chair at

With the vaccine roll out and the ongoing preparation of concert material, we’ll be back singing together soon!

Information for Prospective AVM Members

Rehearsals: Currently meeting virtually. When we can meet in person: Rehearsals are from 7:30 – 9:45 pm every Monday, including most Monday holidays, at Church of the Nativity, 45 Howard St., Northborough. Dress Rehearsals are usually the Wednesday before the concert. Please check the calendar.

Musical Expectations: Members are expected to familiarize themselves with notes, rhythm, and text of music to be rehearsed prior to rehearsal and to review the musical material between rehearsals. Persons arriving late or absent are responsible for learning the material missed and for obtaining score markings.

Rehearsal Notes: Rehearsal notes are distributed weekly via Constant Contact after each rehearsal. These notes indicate the material that will be covered at the next rehearsal as well as areas to be reviewed. The message is distributed by “Bob” and titled Rehearsal Notes. Please prepare for each rehearsal according to this note.

Music: Members are expected to provide their own music. Scores will be available for purchase from AVM at our cost (this often includes a discount).

Dues: Membership dues are $75 per person. With few exceptions, dues will be collected for the whole year and are payable within two weeks of joining.

Fundraising: There will be one annual fundraising drive in the fall. Although individual quotas are not established, it is hoped that all members will actively participate. It is important that a significant percentage of the AVM budget be generated by the membership at this time. This not only facilitates the implementation of musical goals but helps in obtaining funds from corporations and foundations, many of which offer matching grants. It also means that, for the remainder of the year, we can concentrate on the music without the pressures and worries of paying our bills.

Attendance: In order to achieve the musical excellence we are striving for, every member needs to be at every rehearsal on time. We realize that illness, personal crisis, or business commitments may require absence. If you must miss a rehearsal, please notify your Section Coordinator or the Membership Chairperson in advance. The Section Coordinators and the Membership Chairperson frequently call absentees to inquire about their well being (you are important to us as friends as well as musicians) as well as to verify their status in the ensemble. The general policy is that if a member must miss multiple rehearsals for a concert, that member should request a review by the Executive Board via the Membership Chair to determine his/her performance status. The Board tries to be flexible but must consider the overall musical goals of the ensemble.

Attendance Sheets: An attendance sheet will be kept for each rehearsal. Please remember to check off your name when you arrive. The sheet will be on a table outside the rehearsal room door prior to rehearsal.
